(What is the Difference Between 316L Stainless Steel and 316 Stainless Steel)

What is 316L stainless steel and 316 stainless steel?

316L stainless steel is similar to 316 stainless steel in chemical structure
and also contains molybdenum, so its performance characteristics are similar,
that is, excellent corrosion resistance, atmospheric corrosion resistance, good
high temperature strength, can be used under harsh conditions, and excellent
non-magnetic work hardening.

The main difference between the two is that 316L stainless steel is a
low-carbon steel with excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion, so it is
suitable for products with special requirements for resistance to intergranular
corrosion.

The main difference between 316L stainless steel and 316 stainless steel

Intergranular corrosion is a kind of local corrosion, which refers to the
corrosion that spreads to the inside along the interface between the metal
grains. It still maintains a certain metallic luster and is difficult to find,
so this kind of corrosion is more dangerous.

When it comes to intergranular corrosion, we have to mention the welding
process of stainless steel. In the process of high temperature welding of
stainless steel, carbides will be precipitated. When carbides appear on the
solder joints, it will affect the stability of welding. This process of carbide
precipitation is "intergranular corrosion".

After understanding the meaning and formation principle of intergranular
corrosion, we noticed that to prevent intergranular corrosion, the core method
is to artificially reduce the carbide content of stainless steel, and the
stainless steel with reduced carbide content will add the letter "L" after the
model, 316L , 304L is named after reducing the carbon content on the basis of
the original model.

Because 316L stainless steel is resistant to intergranular corrosion, it is
mainly used in industries that need to consider the existence of intergranular
corrosion. For example, in industries with high precision and high risk, without
considering intergranular corrosion, choose 316.
